I have a lot of things to chat about...where to start? On Instagram I recently joined a group of artists who do artist pen pal exchanges. We are to mail something handmade that is small maybe 4"x4" along with a note. I received my package the other day all the way from New Zealand! The artist Helen Dean made me a wonderful abstract painting.
The colours are lovely & it looks perfect in this simple white frame.
I've been painting a lot lately. While creating this new body of work I've discovered a few things. My youngest daughter is very interested in gems, geodes, and rainbows. These images keep repeating themselves in my paintings, without premeditation. A relative recently bought them some FANCY crayons & before they lose their shape I took a quick photo.
The brand is Kid Made Modern if you are interested.
The sun has finally come out in Ontario & Spring is in full effect. The chalk is back & rainbows are where it's at.
I've been teaching a lot more art classes lately which is keeping me busy. This set up is in a local restaurant in town.

I just finished this painting right before I wrote this post. It has been on my easel all week & feels so good to finally have it complete. If you read my previous post on Pittsburgh then you know that I have an interest in architecture. One of my favourite styles is mid-century design. I've worked in several furniture stores that sold classic styles such as Eames & Bertoia. If I was to choose my dream home, it would not be a mansion with a triple car garage. My taste leads me to a horizontal home with angular features such as a slanted roof and a car port. Think "Brady Bunch" exterior with a "Mad Men" interior.
Social Media has allowed me to start online friendships with people who live all over the world. On Instagram for example, I often check to see who likes or comments on my artwork. Perhaps they have similar interests and tastes? A few weeks ago I came across Audrey, a free lance writer living in Seattle. After browsing through her photos, I was drawn to her design choices and her stunning home. I'm not a shy person and if I lived near her I would invite myself to see it in person...it's that good! I asked her if she would be willing to share some photos on my blog and she was up for it.
As I look outside & see snow falling onto the ground, I will just close my eyes and picture myself in her dreamy yard.
Audrey and her husband are DIY professionals in my opinion. They have already tackled the exterior, modernizing it with black paint and building the most amazing upper/lower decks and fences. They are currently finishing renovations on the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and backyard. Busy I know...and she is also home schooling their two sons. I asked her to share a bit about the house and this is what she had to say:

"We moved into our home two years ago. We had been searching for our home for almost a full year after looking, while we were renting. We really wanted a mid century modern home, specifically a Burrows home. He was a well known contractor in the 1950's who had moved to Seattle from California. He had absorbed the styles of Eichler, Neutra, and Alexander and wanted to build homes like that in the Northwest. After searching the slim active listings, we found our dream home built in 1958 by John Burrows."
The details such as the wood ceiling & brick work surrounding the fireplace are original.
For $20 Audrey purchased this 4x8 piece of Douglas Fir from a local Lumbar Yard & created this simple mantle.
"The home owners were retiring and wanting to move out of state. I immediately contacted them by email and waited on pins and needles until I heard from them the next day! Our style is eclectic. I tends towards mid century and Scandinavian modern, with a dash of bohemian thrown in."

I can't pick my favourite element in this room, the puppy...the light fixtures...the wall of windows...or the view into the yard? It's all so good!!!
This hallway leads you to the bedrooms. Audrey recently painted this cross on the wall & wasn't sure if her husband would like it. He came home from work & helped her measure to make sure it was perfect. True DIY love people!
This area of the kitchen has already been renovated. Don't we all wish we could look out those stunning windows while we did the dishes.
Open shelving & a black and white colour scheme add to the modern kitchen.

I hope that Audrey will share more of her home with us in 6 months or so, to see what projects have been crossed off the list. I'm excited to see what those bathrooms are going to look like as we also want to re-do ours. I haven't been to Seattle, but if I go please note I will be stopping by for a tea.
From today I will be hanging my first solo exhibit in a local Gallery in town. I have been thinking about displaying a body of work for a while. Committing to a date is a step in the right direction. Today I wanted to share a glimpse into my studio & some pieces I've been working on. Maybe some of these paintings will make it into the show; maybe not. The experimentation and creative process is the true gratification. I don't know if anyone will connect with my work or if any of it will actually find a permanent home.
This journey I'm on keeps getting better every day. Each little step is leading me in the right direction. I don't think too far ahead. I do make lists of what I hope to accomplish in a day. Maybe studio time will happen, or perhaps my family and doing errands will fill the hours while I am awake. I have been teaching more painting classes lately which has been quite enjoyable. It is nice to interact with other creatives & hear their personal stories. Balancing life is sometimes a juggling act. I find I am a better mother & wife if I take time for myself. Painting is what I often need to balance myself out. I try to stay in the moment while I'm in my studio as I know my time is limited. When I have time to relax in the evening with my husband, you can often find us watching Netflix. Lately we have enjoyed several documentaries on artists/musicians that I have found quite inspiring. "Montage of Heck Kurt Cobain", "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" & "Amy" (Amy Winehouse). It's fascinating to see how others work & what drives them to create, if you are looking for something to watch check them out.
Detail of a larger painting I recently finished. In this section I layered multiple colours & scratched details in creating lines and shapes. I tried to stick to a neutral palette of black & white...however my love of colour found its way in.

I just won a contest from our local library, and when I picked up my gift basket it was filled with a variety of books. I instantly thought of writing this blog post when I read the title on this one. My husband and I took a road trip 8 years ago before we became parents, and it is one of my favourite holidays to date.
I haven't read it yet, I'm excited see what other destinations I can add to my bucket list. Falling Water is not included but I think it is a must see!
When my husband and I told our friends and co-workers we were planning on driving to Pittsburgh for a holiday, everyone asked if we were visiting family. The main highlight of the trip was to see Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water" but we also wanted to see another smaller residential home he designed named "Kentuck Knob". We both love architecture and design & were excited to see these landmarks in real life. Books are great but you cannot imagine what it is really like to step onto the grounds at Falling Water & see the structure and how it was built amongst its natural environment. Our photos are not professional; but they show you some of our favourite elements.

My husband also enjoys walking around museums and galleries... lucky me! This place was great & needs to be on your to do list. It took me a long time to chose a print but I'm happy I didn't leave empty handed. I love colour & Warhol does it so well.
As we were driving through the country side to go to the "famous houses" we passed by an ice cream shop & I made my husband take my photo under the rainbow. Not sure if I was channeling my inner love for Rainbow Brite, but it makes me happy every time I see it.
I'm sure Pittsburgh has more to see and do since we last visited. Do yourself a favour & consider it while planning your next vacation. We also visited the Zoo which would be a great place to take our kids if we ever go back. We have hundreds of cute animal photos, I tried to stick to design & architecture. One of the best things about a road trip is finding new inspiration and looking at your surroundings with a new perspective. Relax & take it all in. Photos are a great way to help document and highlight your favourite parts.
My girls started their March Break last Friday. On Saturday I took a road trip by myself to visit friends of mine that live near our old house in Burlington. Before I became a mother, I never knew how lucky I was to have quiet time to myself whenever I needed it. This trip allowed me to put myself first which honestly, doesn't happen for me as much as it should. I enjoyed meals out & stayed up past my usual bedtime. I'm such a rebel!
You know it's a special occasion if my nails are painted. They are usually covered in paint! I let them dry while I was on the highway. I stopped into a local bookstore & browsed one of my favourite home decor magazines when I got to Burlington. My nails even match! I got the colour in my stocking...I guess Santa's up on his trends!
I had the best time at lunch with these lovely ladies whom I met through Instagram. I have discovered this supportive community & I was excited to actually meet some of my online friends in real life! We are all artists with kids & had lots to chat about. We will be collaborating on a Mother's Day giveaway soon, so if you are not following me on IG get at it!
I am a member at a local Art Gallery in town & I finally set a date for my first solo exhibit last week! ( Insert happy face here) I will post more details in May but, if you are local, save the date. My opening reception will be on Saturday June 4th at 7:00pm. I have some of my artwork for sale at a beautiful shop in town called Burrow. The owner Meg asked me if I would paint some wooden Easter Eggs for her and this is what I came up with. She loved the Christmas ornaments I had made & wanted a similar look. Last night I sat & painted them. I kept telling my husband I was having so much fun. I had barely painted all week as the girls were off of school, I needed to get creative.
I adore photographs of landscapes that are pretty simple & have telephone/hydro poles in them. It's all about the composition folks. The following photos are all pieces of art that are in our home.
I purchased this photograph on canvas for myself as a Birthday gift a few years ago. I discovered Nadine through Etsy. Her work is breathtaking and the photos almost look like paintings. They are muted & somewhat blurry which I find intriguing. Check her out at www.walterhelenaphotography.com
This black & white photograph is a portrait of my grandparents. My husband surprised me & had it blown up from the original copy. To say I love it would be an understatement! The placement of the poles in the background adds to the street scene behind them.
This image was taken on a holiday. The muted tones & movement created by shooting from a moving vehicle are my favourite parts.

I started this painting early last week and thought I would try and document myself painting it for you to see. On Instagram, I often see artists posting a quick video that shows them creating. For me this painting did not happen quickly. I worked on it a few hours a day for an an entire week. I finished it last night before my husband & I went out on a date. An hour before this, I still wasn't happy with the final piece. As an artist I spend a lot of time just looking at a painting. Paintings move from my studio in the basement up to our living room where I can pass by them hung on the wall. This allows me to see what sections I think are working & where improvements could be made. This post is full of photos, I hope you enjoy seeing how I work.
When I started making marks I thought it was going to turn into an abstract landscape. I had never done one before & was looking forward to it.
I started to create layers with shades of blue, mimicking water & movement.
I added more green & blue paint, let it dry & then had fun with various shades of spray paint. I used white, dark green, pink & royal blue. At this point I really liked what direction the painting was headed.
My palette knife was used a lot adding white, teal green & a moss green. I started to think the painting was appearing like a satellite view on the weather network. Not the kind of landscape I was going for!
I began to add more white paint thinking I could transform it somehow.
After the white dried, I continued to use my palette knife & layer on grey & royal blue.
This day was a breakthrough for me as I approached the painting with a fresh set of eyes. I decided I would go for it & cover up lots of sections with mint green. Sometimes this is hard to do for me as I already have a favourite part of the painting. I really like the dark green drips from the spray paint & didn't want to cover them. Guess what? They are now gone & I'm ok with it!
This is a detail shot. For me taking off layers off the paint after I have added them is an important process. The texture created in the blue shapes on the left allows you to see this. I use a damp rag & rub off paint before it is fully dry.
Another detail shot. I asked my husband what he thought of it so far, he said he could see the Chesire Cat. I decided at this point to title the painting "Wonderland". I often name my paintings after titles of songs I was listening to while creating them. This name just felt right. My oldest daughter came & sat behind me as I painted. Her thoughts were "Wow mom...you really like green". I said to her "Is that a bad thing?" Her reply was "Yes".
I brought the painting up to our bedroom & stared at it while folding laundry. I had tried several times before to flip it upside down to see if I preferred it better this way. Today I decided I did. The small pink squares on the bottom are not heavy & I was feeling the composition now. I was excited to go back & work on it more, now that I had a new perspective.
Sorry this one's a bit blurry. I have now began to tone down some of the mint green with white. This really excites me & I know that the piece is almost complete!
A detail of the finished piece. I love the bits of yellow that mixed with pink to make a lovely shade of orange. I have always been drawn to circles & squares, you will find some amongst the shapes in this painting.

Two years ago I received Lisa Congdon's book "Art Inc." for my birthday. Last year I began to re-read it as I started the process of making my website. One of her suggestions was to write down your goals & hang them as a daily reminder. I hung my list on the bulletin board in my art studio & as 2016 approached I was happy with my accomplishments so far.
This list has helped me grow as an artist & achieve personal fulfillment as well. If you have read any of my previous posts or follow me on instagram you already know that I love design, mid century style & home decor magazines. One of my goals was just crossed off the list & I'm happy to share it with you! I have been reading Apartment Therapy and browsing the house tours they post for a long time...I don't even know how many years. I sent a few photos in before Christmas & waited to hear back. A photographer contacted us & arrived a few weeks later to shoot our home. I'm a typical Virgo & love a deadline. I knew all of the little things I kept putting off were going to have to happen before the day arrived. Our Thrift Shop dining chairs got new black seats however, they all didn't get painted as it was freezing cold outside & I am not crazy! The Swissted posters that had been taped to the wall at our front door finally got the piece of acrylic mounted on top of them. Lastly my youngest daughter Kinley got her big girl room. When we moved in two years ago I painted it white & she got things passed down from her older sister. I finally chose a paint colour with her, painted the walls & ceiling, got her headboard recovered in a neutral fabric & had a seat made for her rattan chair. She would always say her chair was so comfy before as she sat on her stuffed animals, I think it's a bit nicer on her bottom now.

I am a pretty low maintenance gal & a trip to the hair salon isn't top priority on my calendar. Since I live in Ontario & our winters our COLD!!! I usually wear a toque every time I leave my house. It's tricky with bangs once I have hat head, they really look awful for the rest of the day. One evening last week I found a few hours to sit & relax while my hair was being cut & coloured. I usually don't take a lot of time to read magazines that aren't the home decor ones that I have monthly subscriptions to. The pile that sat next to my chair was amazing & my hair dresser could tell I was excited about the one I was looking at as he was cutting away.

I am not into fashion trends & usually this type of magazine doesn't catch my attention. I had just read online about an artist named Shantell Martins & her upcoming exhibit in Toronto. This issue has a great interview with her. I follow the design work of Christine Dovey & her Elle Canada Closet project has a great feature as well. The one thing that I was surprised by was how some of the images triggered ideas & memories in my mind of artwork & colour palettes. I am inspired by things I see on a daily basis & this few hours to myself that evening really got ideas flowing.
I used to do a lot of watercolour while in University & nowadays don't use the medium very often. These pages were inspiration for this quick piece.
I love to use cool colours like green & blue, I find them very comforting.
I created this painting a while ago & the dark blue section has always been my favourite section of the painting. To me it has a warmth & distressed feel of your favourite pair of denim jeans.
I think that I may have to browse more fashion ads & magazines. Great ideas are often born when least expected.
I read something the other day about an artist I admire. She posted a photo of a painting on social media that she had reworked & turned into a new painting. I also do this & thought I might share with you a few pieces that got new life after a few months of sitting around in my studio. At the time I made them I was happy enough the with final result, but after looking at the canvases for a while they just didn't feel quite right.

When this painting was created I was never happy with the pink on the top layer, the below painting is it in a new life.
This 8x8" painting titled Palm Springs is a burst of colour & energy. I am so happy I took a chance & added the neon spray paint. It is available in my online shop.
I made this piece & imagined it in a boy's nursery. I always want my work to be versatile and I just wasn't feeling it with this painting. Below is the new & improved version.
This 10x10" painting titled Electric Feel is full of life & was inspired by street art. It is now sold.
As an artist I am still trying to find that groove in my style of painting. I approach each canvas with a fresh set of eyes & look forward to the path it will lead me. Some of you may have liked the before image better than my end result. That's fine, everyone has their own opinion & taste. I personally believe that for my work to be successful I have to love every piece I create. If I wouldn't hang it in my own space then how can I expect a potential customer to fall in love with it & begin an honest relationship with me as an artist.
If you have looked at any of my previous posts you will see that my husband & I have a large collection of artwork in our home. I wanted to share my thoughts on how this was achieved & where you can start looking for art for your own space.
I have found that I have always connected with creative people. If you have a friend, neighbour or co-worker who enjoys photography & takes a pretty good photo ask to see more of their work. They may take some great shots that they would most likely be humbled to share with you if you just asked nicely. A friend of our's, who we met while seated together at a wedding reception, is a lady with many talents. She is a talented musician and a hobby of hers is photography. I asked her for a few images & she emailed them to me. She was also willing to change the size of the jpeg if needed as we enlarged one photo to 4'x 4'.
The small square is a photo of hers that I mounted on a wood block, you don't need to use a frame all the time. It was quick an easy as I purchased the wood panel from a local craft store and painted it white. The photograph leaning behind it is a signed piece that I found at the Salvation Army for $8. There were 3 different photos in a set as they all had the same frame & matting. This is the only one I purchased & I didn't even have to reframe it which is great.
I love to check out yard sales as well. Old postcards, photographs, maps, stamps, the collections people have are endless. If you like it, buy it & then figure out how it can be best displayed in your home.
This painting made me smile as soon as I saw it. I am not normally into traditional still lifes or delicate images like this but for $6 what did I have to lose? It now hangs in my daughter's bedroom.
This is an inexpensive way to display something you love. This is a section of a tea towel I purchased as a souvenir from a holiday. It didn't absorb well so I never used it in the kitchen to begin with. A collection of these hoops with different fabric scraps would look great arranged together. I also once cut up an old t-shirt that had a cute saying on it & put it in a hoop. Instant art that is safe to hang in a nursery or above a child's bed. There is no glass & heavy frame in case it falls off the wall while your little ones are playing or jumping on the bed.
The Polka Dot Print is a page of a kids book my daughter no longer looks at. Calendars also have fantastic designs & illustrations worthy of framing. The photograph is a thrift shop deal for $3. Travel photos look great blown up and printed in black & white. The frame was changed to a simple Ikea one & it has always hung on the gallery wall in our living room. I have a thing for vintage chairs & it was love at first sight.
If you have children they most likely have a favourite toy or love to collect things. Legos, action figures & stuffed animals have the potential to make some interesting & affordable art for kids rooms. Or if you are a grown-up who adores Star Wars, keep the art for your office or television room.
My sister passed this on to my girls a few years ago & I snapped a few photos. I think it would be a great addition to many gallery walls.
Vintage toys such as this telephone are graphic & colourful. I photographed this one I received from my Grandma a few years ago.
If you are a creative person & have a friend who is as well see if they are willing to trade with you. My girlfriend did this painting for me & I made her one in return. Maybe you do embroidery, sew or make wall hangings. Someone would love to have a unique hand made item, you just have to ask I'm sure you will find a few willing participants to swap with especially during the holidays. This is a photograph another girlfriend took, she focus's mainly on newborn's so she gave me the jpeg of this for free. I just had to get it printed & framed. It sits on our kitchen counter & I love looking at it.
You may think this signed & numbered print was purchased at an expensive home decor store as it is on trend with colours for 2016. However it was found at a local consignment shop for under $10. I kept it in the original black frame as it was in great condition.
Of course I would love it if you purchased artwork from small businesses like mine but, reality is that it can get expensive if you are trying to start a collection or fill multiple walls in your space. My rule is that if you can afford it & love it, buy it! You will find a space for it even if you are unsure where you will put it at the time of the purchase. Nowadays, anyone can take a half-decent photo with the use of a cell phone & add a filter on it to make it look unique. Have fun experimenting, you may capture an image that you want to display in your home.
I post a few work in progress photographs on Instagram a few times a week. I am really enjoying sharing my thoughts and inspirations on this form of social media. Before I joined it last summer, I didn't even know what a hash tag was...true fact! Receiving feedback & reading comments on pieces has been helpful. So far, I have found the community very supportive. If you do not follow me on Instagram, here are some of the highlights from the past few weeks.
#doitfortheprocess and #creativityfound are two hashtags I use a lot. These paintings were shared as I worked on them in my studio. These books were christmas gifts I received, all great inspiration for finding creativity in art & design. I've already completed two of them.
A tea towel that shrunk is now a new painting cloth, and a photo I purchased a few years ago at the One Of A Kind Show that gave me a colour palette to work from.
Painted this without realizing I was using Pantone's colours of the year, Rose Quartz & Serenity. Images I see in design influence my work even if I am not aware of it at the time.
While watching Sonic Highways, a show that documents the Foo Fighters as they record an album, an idea came to me for a blog post. Mike D from the Beastie Boys was being interviewed and I remembered that I had read about his home a few years ago, online, in The New York Times.
It was 2013 when I first came across this article. Mike & his wife Tamra, a filmmaker, have mixed a variety of elements & styles together to create a unique family home. The one thing I still remembered three years later was a large abstract painting that hung in the living room. I didn't know exactly what it looked like but, I remember the feeling I had when I first saw it. I needed to find out more on this young Brooklyn artist, Keltie Ferris.
What a great mix of styles. A room I would feel very comfortable in.
Her work & this painting are so colourful & full of energy. I think the use of spray paint really adds a three dimensional quality to this piece. I can only hope that one day my work resonates with those who come across it, and that it is an image that remains with them in some form.
The family put this home up for sale last summer. I would love to know where this beautiful piece of art now resides.

You do not have to hang a large piece of art or a mirror over a mantle. The armoire and painting are both rectangular, the symmetry and placement of them on either side of the fireplace make this wall balanced.
The other day it dawned on me that every chair in our home is preloved or vintage. Whatever the correct term may be, not one was purchased at a chain/ big box store. If you have read any of my other blog posts you know that I love to mix it up with pattern, colour, art & vintage accessories. My husband & I purchased the leather sofa in our living room from a store I worked at when we moved into our current home two years ago. Before that we have had a collection of vintage sofas. Vintage chairs are easier to find & re-upholster in my opinion & you can usually find somewhere to put them in your space. My husband supports my chair obsession & I thank him for it.
I received Emily Henderson's book Styled for a Christmas gift. I am not a stylist but, I did study Interior Decorating in College and I think I have a good eye for putting eclectic looks together. Your space should reflect you & those who enter it hopefully will feel that connection as well. All of our chairs have been collected over years from auctions, estate sales, thrift shops, kijiji, & my parent's house.
My mom is my partner in crime; she knows my taste well & will often find me a deal. Now that we live in the same city we are able to shop with one another which is fun. 2015 was a good year as I was able to find a lot of pieces & rugs to finish off decorating our home.
This chair reminds me of a Bertoia style, the sheepskin softens up the look.
When I discovered this beauty my mother-in-law was driving me & my girls through a small town called Bobcaygeon. If you're Canadian you all know the Tragically Hip song...sorry if you can't get it out of your head now. I seriously yelled "Stop the car... back up" Just like the lady in the Ikea commercials. When we pulled up in front of the thrift shop my mother-in-law asked me what I was interested in? When I showed her the chair she looked at me with a strange face, it was so rusted & grungy. It had previously lived outdoors, but I saw the potential. Hours of scraping paint off in the garage & a few cans of spray paint made it come back to life. My oldest daughter has it in her room. It's not a cuddle up & I'll read you a book kinda chair but, it's comfy when I need to relax & blow dry her hair.

When we first moved into this home I browsed Kijiji (similar to Craigslist) on a daily basis. We had sold stuff before we moved, which allowed me to find some pieces to fit in where I needed them. This ad appeared & I couldn't call the lady quick enough. She lived right up the street from us & was moving so everything was being sold. No bargaining done, I gave her what she was asking as I knew I was getting a deal. This chair sits in our living room, it's comfy too you can ask my husband!
A retro slipper chair tucks nicely into any corner.
My mom got this chair for me probably 15 years ago from an estate sale, I think she paid $10. When we moved my husband didn't want me to sell it & it now sits in the corner of his office. I chose a microfibre material as it is durable & it used to be a popular choice for fabric where I worked. It has a tufted back & a retro style, it makes a great extra chair if you need another seat while entertaining. I also want to tell you that two years ago I scored that Jonathan Adler inspired needlepoint pillow at a church flea market...$2, score of the day! I am not sure what I was thinking when I painted that bentwood stool years ago, first it was orange & it has been yellow for a while now. It was a thrift shop find for $5 I think.

My mom got this pretty much for free at an auction. She had it in her shed in the backyard for a long time before I even saw it. At the time we lived in Burlington & I had no space for it. It sat in the corner of our basement with toys & junk on it for a long time. It now fits perfectly under the window in my youngest daughter's room. I'm glad I held on to it, it feels like it was meant to be in that space. It usually has a lot of her favourite stuffed bunnies on it (she let me move them to take the photo!).

I have worked in a number of furniture & design stores that have sold knock off Eames Chairs. My husband has always wanted one. He watches Mad Men folks and he knows what good design is. One day I found an ad on Kijiji for a chair an ottoman under $200 & I emailed the seller without checking with him first. The colour is perfect as black would not fit in with our colour scheme. He was on board with it & the seller lived down the street from my parents. How easy was that?! She said they were passed down to her from a family member & she no longer had room for them. Lucky us, as they now sit in front of our television in the basement.

Check out a Law & Order episode & you'll see this chair. It's the go to interrogation chair for the television & film industry. My husband & I were on vacation in Pittsburgh years ago & instead of me dreaming of our trip to see Falling Water, I remember telling him that I really needed to go back to the Goodwill Shop we stopped in the previous day. There was a group of these chairs, I chose my two favourite's...$5 each! We drove & didn't have kids so there was room in the trunk. The metal was the same grey but, the upholstery was a dirty green shade. I used so many of those Mr.Clean magic erasers to try & clean them. I think they were in a school as someone has scratched their name on one on the top at the back. My parent's neighbour is an upholsterer & he did these in a white vinyl for me. The material was cheap as I worked at the store where I ordered it from. They now flank a teak console in our laundry room, the lighting was too dark so I brought them upstairs to capture this shot. They are so versatile, extra seating in the living room or as end chairs at the dining table.
Bentwood stools...aren't they pretty?
Stools at our new home were tricky as everything I liked was either the wrong height or too expensive. The previous owners were tall & the counters are not standard height. They left us the three vinyl ones they had with cat scratches on them. So we used them for a year and a half until we got these. I'm crazy & search for stuff online in cities I don't live near. These were in Hamilton (a 2 hour+ drive) & my girlfriend who also loves a good deal picked them up for us. My husband saw the photo of them & said "where are the backs?". Turns out they are comfy as well. I have to supervise my youngest daughter when she climbs up on them but, eventually she'll be able to do it on her own. They were $45 for the set & the caning is in perfect shape. I gave them a fresh coat of black paint & think they add the perfect bit of vintage to our kitchen.
You won't find this solid wood chair at a big box store.
My mom has kept a lot of things from my childhood including a kid's table & two chairs. This is in the girls' playroom & the pink colour I painted them really updates the set from the traditional dark wood they used to be. Note the candy machine which has candy in it that is maybe 10 yrs old. Doesn't everybody pay a huge fortune for decorative candy no one is allowed to eat, or is it just me? I grew up with that in my parent's house. I painted it turquoise as I am not a fan of red... oh the memories.
I was driving home a few weeks ago I noticed the wood shell on this chair sticking out of the back of my neighbour's pick-up truck. I asked him what we was doing with it & he replied that they just got a new office chair & he was taking it to the dump. Timing is everything & luck has a big part of thrifting as well. He is a great guy & even carried it into the house for me. My husband's back was sore from his other chair, so he welcomed this into his office quite easily. It's in pretty good shape other than the piping that is coming off on the arm pads. Maybe one day we'll fix it...maybe not.

Last week I shared a few photos on instagram of new art I am so excited about. I've had an idea in my mind & the box of resin sitting on a shelf for too long. Stepping out of your comfort zone is a great way to expand as an artist, no matter what medium you work in. Photography is a hobby of mine & I look forward to producing a new body of work.
I am not limited to work in only one material, I will only get better as I practise my craft & discover new ways to express myself. The New Year will also bring some collaborations that I am excited to share.

We moved back to my hometown of Peterborough two years ago. When we left Burlington I thought it may be difficult to find fun activities & outings for the girls & I to experience in this new city. Turns out I was wrong.
One of our favourite things to do at the beginning of each month is to explore the local Art Gallery. They have free craft projects & activities, encouraging families to come explore the entire space. Last week as we looked at all of the art hanging on the walls, my youngest daughter asked me to take photos of some of her favourite pieces. If you are looking for something to do with your kids, check out your local galleries. You might be surprised by how much they already know about art & how kid friendly the galleries are.
I love styling & interior decor. I do not love an abundance of seasonal accessories. Lots of people do home tours for the fall & Christmas. I enjoy looking at them but I would never be asked to participate in one. There are no fresh boughs of greenery draped over the doorways, we don't have a mantle to hang our stockings from. We keep it simple, our home already has a lot of art & pattern going on. Don't get me wrong, I love the holidays & ever since our daughters were born it has become a magical time. They get so excited when our elf "Jingle Bells" arrives from the North Pole. They love baking & doing crafts. I'm not much of a baker...but I can think of some creative ornament ideas. Every year I unpack our tree (it's artificial folks I've never had a real one) & get excited to see my collection of vintage ornaments & all of the things my husband & I have accumulated over our 12 yrs of marriage. We gift our girls an ornament every year and hopefully they will have similar memories when they are older.
Lots of our ornaments are passed down from our family.
These photos are of Jingle Bells' first Christmas at our home. I photographed him every morning & sent the images to our sisters & parents so they could share in the fun. Three years later, our girls are 4 & 6, them running around the house looking for him is excitement enough.

My Grandma's wreath got a DIY makeover from a House & Home tutorial.
I made the garland out of artwork my older daughter made as a toddler & I get excited to see it up every year. My husband has a variety of felt ornaments his Aunt made for him as a child, this colourful parrot is one of them. One year we made Pearler Bead animals for relatives; this bear was a gift for my husband. If you do this keep in mind that your home will smell like melted plastic for the day!
My mom loves to thrift & go to Flea Markets just like me. One year she surprised me with this vintage white vase that we had seen while shopping one day. The retro design reminds of work by Jonathan Adler.

You know that friend you have that you never get to see, the one who connects with you instantly after months of separation? Roslyn is that girlfriend, a kind hearted & creative individual who I know many of you will relate to. We've been friends for 17 yrs, & now find ourselves in different cities with families of our own.
I met Roz in University & we hit it off immediately. Her love of fashion has always been evident, even in the art studio. I would wear my Grandpa's old cardigan & jeans, Roz would casually enter the room in a leopard blouse & knee boots. Her style has evolved, & I am so happy that she is sharing a bit of herself today. Her design at home mixes both modern & mid century, and her love of art is noticeable in every vignette. When I need an update on what the current trends are, I check out her website & know that with little effort I can make myself appear like I am a mom who's got it figured out. Roslyn often shops at Joe Fresh, & if you are Canadian you know that means you can do the groceries & pick up something for yourself at the same time...it's a win win!

Q. What is your creative background?
I've always loved art and aesthetics in general--including fashion. I majored in visual arts in undergrad where I focused on small-scale sculpture, then I did my MA in art history. Currently I'm a freelance writer, specializing in fashion and lifestyle topics, and I have a personal style blog, www.styleforage.com.
Q. Do you have a favourite piece of art in your home?
My husband is (used to be?), a painter. I guess it's better to say that he is a painter that used to have a huge studio in Hamilton where he painted large-scale pieces. One of my favourites now hangs in our dining room but hung behind the crib in the our son's nursery when all we had was a tiny "solarium" to work with in our old apartment. It's big--4' x 6'--and it was perfect because it had a huge visual impact in a room where we otherwise had very little space to work with. Plus I thought it was cool that Viggo could wake up looking at his dad's art everyday. Now it hangs in our dining room and I still love it--partly because of the sentimentality and also because it is just a really beautiful painting.
Q. Where do you feel most inspired?
I get a lot of inspiration just walking around Toronto. I love living in a place where aesthetics play a major role in everyday life, whether it be the architecture, restaurants or the street style. I find myself taking mental notes of outfits and decor ideas all the time.
Our dining room. I got the Knoll table as commission years ago when I worked at a mid-century Modern furniture store. The vintage credenza was a gift to ourselves after our wedding, and the chairs were a clearance find at IKEA, which satisfied my desire for chairs with caning. We assembled the gallery wall from pieces that we love by our artist friends and some are by Mike, while others belonged to my grandparents. The mirror is an antique we picked up here in Toronto one day.
Q. How would you describe your personal style at home?
Well my home is eclectic and filled with art. My husband and I belong to an artist-run-centre in Niagara, Niagara Artists Centre, and have purchased work by several of the member artists. As far as furniture is concerned, I'm typically attracted to minimal lines and bold colours but more recently, when I was redecorating the master bedroom in our small Toronto apartment to accommodate ourselves plus the baby, I found myself drawn to crisp whites. My aim was to make the space (which I knew I'd be spending more time in once the babe arrived), feel like a peaceful retreat amidst the chaos that our cramped (toy-filled) apartment, can quickly become.

I love this corner of our home right now because of all the love that went into making the pieces we used to decorate it. The quilt was a gift when Gigi was born and is based on an abstract work by our friend and artist, Marco Cibola. My sister cross-stitched Gigi's name, and I ordered the sweet, little weaving from Canadian Etsy seller, WIOUX.

Q. What was one of the biggest challenges that you faced as you started your own business? How did you overcome that?
I always say that I'm a writer for a reason--I like to be behind the scenes--but working as a freelancer in a fairly saturated market requires a lot of hustle and networking so I'm constantly pushing myself beyond my comfort zone in that regard, which has probably been the toughest part. (I know it sounds crazy because I have a blog and am active on social media but those are just pictures--I prefer to let them do the talking!) I think I am overcoming it naturally though, just by the fact that I am becoming more comfortable with what I'm doing. For a while I didn't think of my work as a business, but rather odd jobs that I was stringing together. Now I'm proud that I have made a career for myself that allows me to do what I love while staying at home with my four year old and five month old.
Q. What are you working on now that you¹re most excited about?
I'm working on some holiday stories, which I always love because I really do think it's the most wonderful time of the year :). I've also got some exciting collaborations coming up on the blog. I should mention that what really excites me in terms of style, is finding great deals. I'm a shopaholic on a shoestring and I love the challenge that that presents. The collaboration that I'm most excited about is in keeping with the idea that you can look stylish no matter your clothing budget!
