Collaboration + a Giveaway!

One day last year I stumbled across this website (Carve Out Time For Art) and found myself so excited by everything I was reading. Two wonderful artists Marissa Huber & Heather Kirtland had interviewed women who were artists & mothers. Each story was so inspiring and unique. How individuals find time to create while juggling family and often a full time career was a topic that was new to me. As a mother with young children I was intrigued to say the least.

Fast forward to present day, these wonderful ladies gave their COTFA followers an opportunity to connect with other artists within the IG community. You could sign up for phone dates, where you were paired up with three different artists from around the world. After you filled out a survey sharing a bit about your interests, matches were sent & instructions followed. You were then on your own to make it happen.

Tiffany Thomas was my 2nd phone date and I instantly fell in love with her pottery. Her ceramic work focuses on an array of designs; from cups and mugs to light fixtures and table pieces. All of her pieces are hand carved. "We are a ceramics and painting studio located in Florence, SC. We also host The Artisan Shop; a collection of artists' artisan goods from the Pee Dee region. We specialize in pottery classes, pottery lessons, and abstract art."

I've never tried any type of pottery before, Tiffany makes it look so easy.

After chatting for a while Tiffany asked me if I would be interested in doing a collaboration with her. I really had no idea what she was thinking at first, so she filled me in on her idea & I agreed. She then emailed me some vases to choose from & I began working on a Plant Study painting, my first on wood panel. I sent Tiffany photos of my process to make sure she liked the colour palette I was working with. She said she loved it, so I was relieved. After completing my painting, I packaged it up to send to her.

This is a cut out I made that is a similar size to Tiffany's design. I wanted the plant to be to scale & this helped me visualize it. My daughters happen to have a matching ruler & you can see I used up that purple paint!

The textured plant is complete. I found it a bit tricky to use my putty knife to create the layers on wood in comparison to my usual medium of canvas. Stepping out of your comfort zone is necessary sometimes.

My portion of the piece is complete, time to package it up & mail it to the US!

Here it is all finished. I am so happy with how it turned out & want to thank Tiffany for asking me to do this collaboration with her. We have decided that we want to share this original piece of art with someone so a giveaway is happening! Since Mother's Day is only a few weeks away & considering that we met through COTFA, this is the perfect time for us to share it with you. Friday Apr 28- Sun Apr 30th, you will have the opportunity to try & win it. All you need to do is follow us both on Instagram, like the photo shown above & tell us what your favourite Mother's Day memory is. Easy right!! Contest open to US & Canadian residents only. A winner will be announced next Monday May 1st. Good luck!!
